*Colorado (-18.5) over Colorado State 43-35 2ot
Of course, this has to be the craziest game of the weekend. If you had Colorado State +18.5, you had the right side by a mile. The Rams played a fantastic game, but it was Coach Prime and his sons Shedeur and Shilo who had the last laugh. Shilo had the first score with an 80-yard interception return for a TD. Shedeur completed 38 of 47 for 348 yards with four TDs and one pick. With 36 seconds left, he led the Buffs to a 95-yard drive, capped off by a 45-yard TD pass to Jimmy Horn Jr. and a pass to Michael Harrison to get the two-point conversion. That tied the game and sent it to overtime. Harrison also caught two TDs in overtime. CSU QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi was sensational at times, tossing for 367 yards and three TDs, but also had three picks. He completed 16 of those passes to Tory Horton, who set a Rams’ record for receptions and also had a TD pass.
*Oregon State (-24.5) over San Diego State 26-9
Okay, so Oregon State didn’t cover. But San Diego State is a difficult team to play because they defend well and they take possession of the clock to keep the opponents’ offense off-the-field. However, this team is going to go as far as Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei takes them. He threw for 284 yards with a TD and ran for a TD against the Aztecs. But he also threw two picks and completed just 14 of 30. The No. 15 Beavers can make waves and while this game was never in doubt, Uiagalelei will need to step up.
*Ohio (+1.5) over Iowa State 10-7
There’s Colorado/Colorado State and there’s this yawnfest. But what we’ve seen with Iowa State is that they have certainly been impacted by the gambling scandal, but they also had players that suffered from food poisoning. That included star wide receiver Jaylin Noel. Ohio star QB Kurtis Rourke was ordinary, throwing for 135 yards and a TD, but that was enough to get the win. Don’t throw out Iowa State just yet and consider that they will be big underdogs in most of their Big 12 games. QB Rocco Becht (233 yards, 2 INTs, 31 yards rushing) should perform better with his top receiver back. He was also affected by the food poisoning.
*No. 3 Florida State (-26) over Boston College 31-29
This was a gutsy performance by the Eagles at home, who were down 31-10 in the third quarter and scored the next 19 points to scare the Seminoles fans. Jordan Travis came back from an injury to throw for 212 yards and two TDs, but a concern for the Noles has to be the pass defense. There’s no reason BC should have been in this game after committing a program-record 18 penalties for 132 yards. But Eagles’ QB Thomas Castellanos threw for 305 yards and ran for 95 yards to give his team the late charge.
*No. 12 Alabama (-36.5) over USF 17-3
Another disappointing effort for Alabama on offense. Nick Saban used two quarterbacks in this game and got no results. Tyler Buchner completed just 5 of 14 for 34 yards and Ty Simpson threw for 73 yards and a score. Fortunately, the Crimson Tide still had a running game and Roydell Williams, who rushed for 129 yards. The defense allowed just 87 passing yards and 177 rushing yards on 46 carries. So Saban announced on Monday that he’s back to Jalen Milroe as the starting quarterback, who threw two picks against Texas in the previous week.
*No. 1 Georgia (-26) over South Carolina
While Alabama was struggling against South Florida, Georgia was down 14-3 at the half against South Carolina. The Dawgs seem to throw a bad game or two every season and wake up in the second half. The only issue is that they have a new QB in Carson Beck. It took a while to get going without key WR Ladd McConkey, who was out with an injury. He did finish with 269 yards on 27-of-35 passing. The Georgia kicking game was also a problem as Peyton Woodring missed a 43-yard field goal in the fourth and a 28-yard attempt with 3:27 left in the half. Stay tuned for that situation. South Carolina competed well, but Spencer Rattler struggled with two picks and completed just 22 of 42.
*Florida (+4.5) over No. 11 Tennessee 29-16
The Gators controlled this game in the second quarter at home, opening up a 26-7 lead in the half and holding on in the second half, scoring just three points. Their running game was the story as Trevor Etienne rushed for 172 yards. Michigan transfer QB Joe Milton was adequate for the Vols, throwing for 287 yards and two TDs, but also a pick. The key to slowing down the Vols is limiting their running game, because Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz (166 yds, 1 TD) is more of a game-manager. What does this game mean? That Florida is still a tough out in the SEC, despite what happened in the opener against Utah.
*Syracuse (-1) over Purdue 35-20
Is Syracuse for real? QB Garrett Schrader certainly is with 195 yards rushing and four TDs and 184 yards passing. He set a school record for rushing yards for a QB. Hudson Card threw for 323 yards with a TD and pick for Purdue, but that wasn’t enough. Purdue fumbled the ball seven times, losing three and turned the ball over on downs three times. This was a strong road win for the Orange, but they allowed 29 first downs and over 400 yards of total offense. They aren’t likely to get four turnovers each game.
*Fresno State (-3.5) over Arizona State 29-0
Is there a reason why Fresno State is not ranked yet? They had 17 votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll. They’ve won 12 straight games, which is second in the nation to Georgia’s 20 consecutive. ASU helped out with eight turnovers in 13 possessions. They were shut out at home for the first time since 1988. First-year coach Kenny Dillingham has his work cut out for him. Starting QB Jaden Rashada was out due to an undisclosed injury. His backup Trenton Bourget left in the first quarter with a leg injury. Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne left the game after throwing two picks for 52 yards with an undisclosed injury. Fourth-string QB Jacob Conover, from BYU, had two picks and was 6-of-16 for 89 yards. Fresno State QB Mikey Keene, a UCF transfer, completed 32 of 48 for 281 yards with two TDs and no picks. The Bulldogs will have a few tests in the Mountain West led by Boise State at home and San Diego State on the road. But if everything goes right, they could go undefeated by the end of the regular season.
