*Let’s start with the last game as No. 9 USC needed three overtimes to beat Arizona 43-41 as a 19.5-point favorite. USC’s defense continues to struggle even against mediocre talent. Caleb Williams had a subpar team, throwing for just 219 yards, while AU’s Noah Fifita threw for 303 yards and five TDs. Arizona could be a team to watch under Jedd Fisch. They are 5-1 ATS and 3-3 SU. While they haven’t had that big win yet, they are getting closer.
*Ok, what the heck was Mario Cristobal thinking? No. 17 Miami-Florida was laying 19 against Georgia Tech and lost 23-20. That’s bad enough to lose to Georgia Tech, but it’s the way they lost the game. Before we get to that, how was the game this close when Miami dominated in total yards (454-20) and time of possession (33:56-24:34). Oh yeah, the Hurricanes finished with five turnovers to two to Georgia Tech. With around 30 seconds left, Miami led 20-17 and had the ball at the Tech 30. All they had to do was take a knee because the Yellow Jackets had no timeouts left. Instead. They handed the ball off to Don Chaney Jr. who fumbled the ball. The Yellow Jacket had the ball with 25 seconds left and down three with no timeout left. The game should have still been over, but Haynes King found Christian Leary for a 44-yard game-winning TD over two Miami defenders, who just can’t allow anybody to get behind them in that situation-but they did.
*Wyoming upset Fresno State 24-19 as a 5.5-point underdog at home. Fresno State came into this game ranked 24th and having won 14 straight games. The Cowboys are now 5-1 and 2-0 in the MWC thanks to a game-saving play from Cole Godbout, who intercepted Mikey Keene with 46 seconds left to seal the victory. Andrew Peasley completed 19 of 27 for 183 yards and three second-quarter TDs. Fresno State still has a chance at a New Year’s Six Bowl (as the highest-ranked Group of Five team heads there), but will now have competition from Tulane, Memphis, Wyoming and Air Force.
*Georgia showed why they are the number one team in the nation-again. They destroyed No. 20 Kentucky 51-13 as a 14.5-point underdog. They had no problems defeating the Wildcats as Carson Beck threw for 389 yards and four TDs. All-World TE Brock Bowers added seven catches for 132 yards and a score. The defense allowed just 183 yards. Kentucky QB Devin Leary managed to complete just 10 of 26 for 128 yards with two TDs and a pick. The Wildcats’ defense did help matters allowed over 600 yards of offense. After Vanderbilt, the schedule for Georgia gets tougher as they will face Florida (in Jacksonville), Missouri, Ole Miss, and at Tennessee.
*The game of the day lived up to its billing when No.12 Oklahoma beat No. 3 Texas 34-30 as a 3.5-point dog. Last season, Dillon Gabriel missed this game and Texas drilled the Sooners 49-0. This year, Gabriel was the difference as he threw for 285 yards and a TD and ran for 113 yards and a score, leading a last-minute TD to lift the Sooners to the win over their rivals. There was not a defensive masterpiece as the Longhorns totaled 527 yards on offense, but turned the ball over three times. Texas’ defense allowed OU to move the ball down the field in 75 yards in just five snaps. At 6-0, the Sooners are smelling the CFP and the rest of the schedule is all winnable with Kansas and Oklahoma State on the road. That’s followed by West Virginia, BYU on the road and TCU at home. Texas will now need to sweep the board in what looks like a down year for the Big 12 aside from the Horns (9th) and Sooners (5th). Kansas is the only other Big 12 team ranked (23rd).
*Speaking of the Big 12, Oklahoma State shocked Kansas State on Friday as a 12-point underdog 29-21. This is the same Cowboys team that lost to South Alabama and a bad Iowa State team. Kansas State turned the ball over three times and struggled to find a rhythm on offense. The Wildcats were down 26-7 at one point and needed two second-half TDs to make it interesting. K-State QB Will Howard (15-of-34) had a rough game with three picks and 152 yards passing. He did have 104 yards rushing and a score as the Wildcats fell to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12. Ollie Gordon led the Cowboys with 136 yards rushing, while kicker Alex Hale nailed five field goals, including one from 53 yards.
