NFL Trade Tracker 2020
The NFL landscape has been shaken up some this offseason, and it will be interesting to see how some of the trades during the break pan out. Some moves made sense, but others had fans everywhere scratching their heads wondering what had just happened. Today, I'm going to take a look into some of the offseason NFL trades and break them down just a little.
Jacksonville Jaguars & Denver Broncos - 3/3/20
Jaguars Receive: 2020 4th Round Pick
Broncos Receive: CB A.J. Bouye
The Jaguars were obviously in rebuild mode throughout the break. I really feel as though Jacksonville sold themselves short here in an attempt to dump salary. The Broncos gave up virtually nothing to take on Bouye's contract, and in return they received a top cornerback in the league. Denver was the clear winner of this trade.
Jacksonville Jaguars & Baltimore Ravens - 3/15/20
Ravens Receive: DT Calais Campbell
Jaguars Receive: 2020 5th Round Pick
Once again, this was a desperate attempt to dump salary cap space on Jacksonville's part. I honestly believe that this trade was worse than the Bouye one. They got nothing in return but a measly fifth round pick in safety Daniel Thomas from Auburn. Baltimore has to be loving this deal as they won this one easily.
Arizona Cardinals & Houston Texans - 3/16/20
Cardinals Receive: WR DeAndre Hopkins and 2020 4th Round Pick
Texans Receive: RB David Johnson and 2020 2nd Round Pick
This was one of the marquee trades of the break. Unless Bill O'Brien knows something that no one else knows, this was a horrible deal. Houston gives away one of the top receivers in the NFL if not the best, and David Johnson, albeit he was electric a few years ago, isn't going to be enough to replace the output of Hopkins. The Cardinals beefed up their receiver core, and they will be scary this season after this sweet deal.
Atlanta Falcons & Baltimore Ravens - 3/16/20
Falcons Receive: TE Hayden Hurst and 2020 4th Round Pick
Ravens Receive: 2020 2nd Round Pick and 2020 5th Round Pick
I love this deal for both teams. Atlanta got a great replacement for Austin Hooper who left via free agency. Hurst was being under-used with Baltimore as they have an abundance of tight ends. The Ravens took J.K. Dobbins with the second round pick, who has some huge potential to replace the aging Mark Ingram in a few years. There should be all smiles from either side on this trade.
San Francisco 49ers & Indianapolis Colts - 3/16/20
49ers Receive: 2020 1st Round Pick
Colts Receive: DT DeForest Buckner
The Colts got a key piece to their defense in this deal. Keep up with me on this draft pick, though because it was moved around. San Francisco traded this pick to Tampa Bay for the next pick in the draft plus a mid fourth round pick in which the 49ers traded to the Vikings. San Francisco used their pick from Tampa Bay to select defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw to replace Buckner. Indianapolis got a much better player than a first round selection could have gotten at the moment and the 49ers got his replacement with their pick.
Minnesota Vikings & Buffalo Bills - 3/16/20
Vikings Receive: 2020 1st Round Pick, 5th Round Pick, 6th Round Pick, 2021 4th Round Pick
Bills Receive: WR Stefon Diggs, 2020 7th Round Pick
The Diggs trade rumors finally came to fruition. Buffalo snags a key receiver while Minnesota loaded up on draft picks. None of the draft picks were really worth mentioning besides wide receiver Justin Jefferson from LSU that the Vikings took in the first round. I like how this deal works out for both sides. The Bills needed another solid receiver and Minnesota got a nice replacement in Jefferson.
Chicago Bears & Jacksonville Jaguars - 3/18/20
Bears Receive: QB Nick Foles
Jaguars Receive: 2020 4th Round Pick
This was actually the best deal for Jacksonville this offseason. Chicago picks up a quarterback who could potentially replace Trubisky, and Foles obviously wasn't the answer for the Jaguars. Jacksonville took linebacker Shaquille Quarterman from Miami (FL) with this fourth round pick who was a steal. This trade seems to be a great deal for both sides involved.
Detroit Lions & Philadelphia Eagles - 3/19/20
Lions Receive: 2020 3rd Round Pick, 2020 5th Round Pick
Eagles Receive: CB Darius Slay
I like this addition for the Eagles. Detroit knew they were taking Slay's replacement in Jeffrey Okudah from Ohio State with their third pick in the draft, and this was a great move in terms of clearing cap space. Philadelphia desperately needed to beef up their secondary, and Slay is a great addition to a team who is looking to return to their Super Bowl form that they once possessed.
Seattle Seahawks & Washington Redskins - 3/23/20
Seahawks Receive: CB Quinton Dunbar
Redskins Receive: 2020 5th Round Pick
This was a beautiful trade for the Seahawks. They needed help on the defensive side of things, especially their secondary, after having one of the worst in the league last season. Dunbar is coming off of a solid 2019 season with Washington, and Seattle got him for a steal after only giving up a fifth round pick for him.
Houston Texans & Los Angeles Rams - 4/9/20
Texans Receive: WR Brandin Cooks & 2022 4th Round Pick
Rams Receive: 2020 2nd Round Pick
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Houston was actually the winning team in this trade. Cooks was vastly under-used with the Rams who have an abundance of wide receivers and the Texans needed a receiver after trading away DeAndre Hopkins. I don't understand what Los Angeles was doing on the back-end of this deal however. They selected receiver Van Jefferson from Florida with the pick, a player in which they didn't need.
New England Patriots & Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 4/21/20
Patriots Receive: 2020 4th Round Pick
Buccaneers Receive: TE Rob Gronkowski & 7th Round Pick
I'm not going to spend a ton of time on this one as this deal is vastly known. It made sense for New England to take this trade as their two options were either an upgrade in a draft pick or nothing at all as Gronk wasn't going to play for them. We don't know what Gronk has left yet, so I will declare the Patriots the winners of this trade until we see what he can bring to the table in Tampa Bay.
San Francisco 49ers & Washington Redskins - 4/25/20
49ers Receive: LT Trent Williams
Redskins Receive: 2020 5th Round Pick, 2021 3rd Round Pick
This was another trade on a long list of deals that work out for most parties involved. The 49ers get to patch up their offensive line a tad, and seven time pro-bowler Trent Williams finally got a chance to get away from Washington. The Redskins didn't really receive a lot in return here, which means that San Francisco are victorious in this trade.
Miami Dolphins & San Francisco 49ers - 4/25/20
Dolphins Receive: RB Matt Breida
49ers Receive: 2020 5th Round Pick
San Francisco had no need for Breida as they already featured a full backfield, so this move was good for both sides. Many thought Miami would take a running back in the draft, but instead they picked up Breida and only gave up a low round pick. This allowed the Dolphins to focus their draft picks on other needs, and Miami has since pieced together a lineup that looks as though it is heading in the right direction.
