Rivers will coach high school football after he retires
Philip Rivers announced his plans after playing in the NFL. Rivers will become head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama, it was announced on Friday by the school.
Rivers signed with Indianapolis in the offseason and at 38, was heading towards his 17th season in the NFL. He didn't say that 2020 would be his last season in the league and would he take over officially after he retires from the NFL.
Steve Rivers coached his son at Athens High School in 1999 and Philip would go on to a career at N.C. State. Philip Rivers remarked how one of his childhood dreams was to play in the NFL and the other was to become a high school football coach, just as his father did.
This could be the last season for Rivers, who signed a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $25 million with the Colts. In 16 seasons with the Chargers, Rivers threw for 397 touchdown passes, 59,271 yards and has the 10th-best passing efficiency rating of all time at 95.1.
“I think it is a one year at a time deal,” said Rivers on Friday morning from Al.com. “You get to 38 and play as long as I have … I’ve expressed publicly and the Colts have said too they hope it’s more than one year. But we take it one year at a time. I love playing. When that time does end, you will get the same passion and work ethic at this school and community that I’ve poured into my career.”
