We’re not far away from NHL camps getting underway. Now, it’s time to talk about the next great star in hockey. The race for the Calder Trophy, which was won by Connor Beard last season, begins on Oct. 4 when Buffalo takes on New Jersey in Prague, Czechia.
As for the top 10 favorites (Draft Kings), here is the list
*Matvei Michkov +450
*Macklin Celebrini +500
*Logan Stankoven +550
*Cutter Gauthier +650
*Will Smith +700
*Dustin Wolf +1000
*Lane Hutson +1000
*Mavrik Borque +3000
*Jesper Wallstedt +3500
*Fabian Lysell +5000
Favorite: Matvei Michkov, Philadelphia Flyers
The Russian winger is just 19 years of age and a winger for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers finished 27th in goals last season and Michkov had 41 points and 19 goals in 48 games in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He’ll have the opportunity to perform for a team that desperately needs his scoring but also trusts younger players.
Our pick: Cutter Gauthier, Anaheim Ducks
Gauthier will be playing on the first line after scoring 38 goals with 65 points in 41 games at Boston College last season. Anaheim is rebuilding so they will play him as much as possible. He’s also 6-3, 190 so he should be able to withstand the rigors of the NHL at the age of 20.
Longshot: Marvik Borque, Dallas Stars +300
Borque is just 5-10, but was a very productive player in the AHL, playing for the Texas Stars. He scored 77 points in 71 games in the 2023-24 season. Dalla has a loaded farm system and he’s another gem that will have a productive first year
